Dunster is regarded as England’s largest medieval village, with over 100 Grade 2 listed buildings, many over 500 years old. The village is situated in Exmoor National Park, a conservation area of outstanding natural beauty. It is perfect for walking, cycling or simply unwinding.
Spears Cross is situated at the foot of Dunster Castle and was built in 1460. It has a real ‘wow’ factor and is one of the most atmospheric places to stay in the village and also one of the most comfortable. Spears Cross offers four individually styled and generous sized bedrooms. A comfortable lounge for afternoon tea (from our range of 15 teas) or an evening glass of wine and a linen tabled dining room provides a relaxing air for guests. We are fully licensed.
Spears Cross is special enough to have previously been awarded ‘Bed & Breakfast of the Year’ in the South West as well as Trip Advisor 2013 and 2014 Winner of the ‘Traveller’s Choice Bargain Hotels’, placing it as one of the top 25 in the UK.
The bedrooms are of a high standard and all boast a specially made ‘super king size’ bed with over 2,000 springs. A decanter of Marsala, Penhaligon toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, Bose music system, Panasonic TV together with tea and a coffee cafetière.
Our breakfast has developed into something special. We use local produce where possible. Our bacon is specially cured and smoked for us; sausages are locally made, as is the black pudding and hog’s pudding. Tea and coffee are produced by D J Miles in Porlock. We use artisan spelt bread as well as making our own with flour from Dunster Water Mill. Orange juice is freshly squeezed in the morning.
Spears Cross is too small to be graded as a hotel, but offers much more than a humble B&B. We have put our hearts into providing the quality, attention to detail and consistency of service that we would expect if we were staying away for a short break.
